Why 2018 is your best year yet

By Schulter Etyang

2018 is here with us. Yes, yes, yes. Jenny and I always look forward to every new year with expectation because of the promises, blessings, and goodwill that God affords us because of what Jesus has done. To us, every year is another opportunity to receive and enjoy ALL those promises, blessings and goodwill. I know I sound like that charismatic preacher on TBN that you don’t like. I know, I know…

But hear me out.

I believe that 2018 will be your best year yet. Why? Let’s do some Bible study, okay?

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:2 (NASB)

For He says, “At the acceptable time I listened to you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of salvation”

Paul uses the word acceptable twice. The Greek word for acceptable is dektos which Thayer a Greek scholar translates as most blessed time when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound. The HELPS Word studies defines dektos as describing what is welcomed because pleasing.

Most blessed time when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound…. What is welcomed because pleasing.

The second time Paul uses the word acceptable, he uses the Greek word euprodektos which basically means the same as dektos but with more emphasis. It is more emphatic.

Notice dektos is in the present tense — now is the dektos time — not tomorrow or in the future.

Notice in the definition of dektos the favor is in plural — favors.

Notice also free favors. You will not have to work for these favors.

Why dektos?

HELPS Word studies points us to the why — we are welcomed because pleasing. Me pleasing? No. Jesus is pleasing. We are welcomed because Jesus is pleasing. (Matthew 3:17, Matthew 17:5, Mark 1:11, Mark 9:7, Luke 3:22, Luke 9:35,2 Peter 1:17)

Because Jesus pleases his father, his father is pleased with us and thus we are welcomed. We who were not pleasing before are now pleasing. This is why we can receive and enjoy the free favors of God that profusely abound.

We are welcomed because Jesus is pleasing

Now that we are done with what Jesus has done for us (theological indicatives — what Jesus has done for us). Let’s talk about how this is going to play out in 2018.

The free favors of God that profusely abound will show up in various forms — opportunities, new friendships, creative ideas, new skills, travel, business, family, marriage, education, new ventures, promotions, new careers, health, character formation, rest, and SO MUCH MORE.

Challenges

Will there be challenges in 2018? Of course. We live in a fallen world. Life is going to ask you difficult questions. The enemy of your soul will do all he can to distract and discourage you. He will ambush you with issues. He will work over time to make sure you doubt what Jesus has done for you.

But here’s the really good news, there is profusely abounding grace to help you face every single challenge.
